What is interpersonal therapy?

Interpersonal psychotherapy, usually shortened to IPT, explores the relationship between mood and what is happening in your life with other people. It was developed as a treatment for depression.

The work looks at relationship difficulties and changes in your life. It is not about deciding who is to blame, but understanding what is happening and where support or change might help.

Finding a focus together

IPT is a structured approach. You and your therapist consider the links between your emotional wellbeing and significant relationships or events, then agree a focus for the work.

This may involve exploring how you communicate needs, respond to conflict or find support during a change in your life. The approach is chosen in relation to your circumstances rather than a fixed idea of what your relationships should look like.

Connection on your own terms

Kate’s writing on IPT and autism emphasises choice and adaptation. Different communication styles, sensory experiences and preferences for connection deserve respect.

The aim is not to make an autistic person behave in a more neurotypical way. It is to explore what meaningful relationships and sustainable support look like for that individual. IPT will not be the right fit for everyone, and the initial conversation is a chance to consider your options.
